Do you know who was the first black athlete to play for the NHL? Did you know that he was from New Brunswick? That’s right! In 1958, Willie O’Ree joined the NHL team, The Boston Bruins.
O’Ree rose above the racism and hatred he was recieving, and became a trail blazer for other black athletes. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008.
There is a children’s book called Meet Willie O’Ree by Elizabeth Macleod.
